SWR-394 - Social Work & Substance Use

Semester Credits: 3 Weeks: 8

This course begins with an overview of historical and contemporary trends in how society views addiction, responds to people affected by addiction, and the systems used to try to eradicate addiction to illegal substances. Students will gain an understanding of the physiological and psychological effects of drugs and will learn the diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders, models of etiology, and treatment approaches. The course builds on prior knowledge of individual, family, and group counseling strategies with information specific to the treatment of people with substance use disorders.
